The 2023 High Level Workshop on ERA is co-organised with CSIC and the Spanish Ministry for Science and Innovation. It deals with 'Challenges to reciprocity and equitable scientific collaboration between Europe, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean'.
Science Europe welcomes the new agreement of association of the United Kingdom to the Horizon Europe Framework Programme.

The 2023 Annual Meeting of the Global Research Council took place in The Hague from 29 May to 2 June. On Tuesday 30 May, Science Europe & CoARA jointly organised a side event at the Global Research Council Annual Meeting in The Hague, the Netherlands. This report aims to identify activities for science-informed policy making, to map those funded and performed by Science Europe Member Organisations, and suggests some recommendations. It is based on a survey held among Science Europe Member Organisations and a subsequent focus group.
How to become an effective science-policy advisor? The science-policy interactions have a longstanding relationship with complex dynamics. The COVID pandemic was only one of the ‘wicked problem’, where decision-makers called for science-informed advice. This report showcases 16 lessons learnt from the event Good Advice for (Young) Science-Policy Advisors, organised by Science Europe, FORMAS and Marie Curie Alumni Association on 29 April 2022.
The climate crisis calls all of us to act urgently. Reducing carbon emissions is a top priority to respect the Paris Agreement and keep the global temperature increase below +1.5˚. Everybody should play their role: Science Europe, in its Strategy Plan for 2021–2026, set the goal to “strengthen the role and contribution of science to tackle societal challenges”.
The Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) is now up and running since its official launch on 1st December at the Constitutive Assembly meeting of the Coalition after a year for intense drafting and development where Science Europe played a central role in both the Drafting Team and Interim Secretariat.

The 10th World Science Forum (WSF) took place at the International Convention Center in Cape Town, South Africa, 5–9 December 2022. The WSF is a forum that addresses the social, economic relevance, influence and responsibilities of science, and the 2022 edition addressed the issue of “Science for Social Justice”. The event was organised by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), Member of Science Europe that recently re-joint our organisation, in cooperation with UNESCO, the International Science Council (ISC), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP).
Together with UKRI, Science Europe is organising the European Regional Meeting of the Global Research Council to provide input to the 2023 GRC Annual Meeting.
The Constitutive Assembly of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) took place on 1 December 2022. The Assembly, which brought together the organisations that signed the Agreement for Reforming Research Assessment by 17 November and have confirmed membership in the coalition, officially launched CoARA and decided on the terms of its governance and operations.
Several initiatives attempt to bridge the R&I gap between Eastern and Western Europe, including the European Commission's €3.3bn "Widening" plan, and the relaunched ERA. Implementation remains difficult, however. Science Europe sponsored and co-organised the first regional event of the new Science|Business Widening Initiative to address this issue.
The 19th Annual Meeting of the Science and Technology in Society Forum (STS forum) took place at the Kyoto International Conference Center, Kyoto (Japan), 2-4 October 2022, with the participation of nearly 1,000 global leaders in science and technology, policymaking, business, and media from over 80 countries, regions, and international organizations.
Science Europe surveyed its Member Organisations on existing practices and policies for interdisciplinary research for the Green & Digital Transition. This report presents the results and some recommendations to reinforce, develop, and improve them.
