Science Europe is pleased to announce that it is signing the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA).
Researchers, research services, and other community members at Research Funding and Performing Organisations play a key role in establishing recognition systems through the research assessment processes that they implement. These recognition systems strongly contribute to determining what is understood as research quality and excellence. Based on the Science Europe Values Framework (published in July 2022), this paper provides practical recommendations and good practice examples detailing how research organisations can continuously improve the way they assess research and researchers. The recommendations help to embed our shared values and contribute to the evolution of research cultures in Europe.
On Tuesday 28 March, the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) took a big step forward by launching its call for Working Group proposals and national chapters. CoARA is a community initiative at its core, and therefore the working groups will be central to the success of the initiative and to the reform process more generally.
The Directorate-General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission organised a workshop on ‘An EU copyright & data legislative framework fit for research: barriers, challenges and potential measures’ on 23 and 24 February 2023 in Brussels. The Constitutive Assembly of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) took place on 1 December 2022. The Assembly, which brought together the organisations that signed the Agreement for Reforming Research Assessment by 17 November and have confirmed membership in the coalition, officially launched CoARA and decided on the terms of its governance and operations.

The ‘Science Europe Conference on Open Science’ was held on 18 and 19 October 2022 in Brussels, Belgium and online. The conference programme featured 36 speakers across 4 keynote presentations, 2 panel discussions, and 14 breakout sessions. In total, close to 600 participants attended the event.
On the occasion of the International Open Access Week 2022 (OA Week 2022) from 24 - 30 October Science Europe reaffirms Open Science as a cross-cutting priority and puts a spotlight on the many activities, initiatives and events carried out in the past months.
