Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia Celebrates Third Anniversary

Science Europe’s newest Member Organisation, the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia (SFRS), was established in March 2019 and celebrates its third anniversary in the coming month.

An institution that supports scientific and research activities in the Republic of Serbia, the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia aims to provide funds and support the conditions for the continuous development of world-class scientific and research activities.

Over the past three years, the SFRS has opened five programmes for financing scientific projects that will enhance the capacity of young researchers, improve scientific co-operation with Serbian scientific diaspora, create new technological achievements with the use of artificial intelligence, enable the solving of problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and support projects based on outstanding ideas. Through highly competitive process of selection, 282 scientific projects have been approved for funding, and almost 10% of researchers in Serbia have gotten the opportunity to implement their ideas.

The procedures and programs of the SFRS are aligned with best practices of the national funds and research agencies around the world. Evaluation processes of project proposals include administrative verification followed by two-stage scientific assessment. Each project proposal is evaluated by international experts. The evaluators database of the SFRS includes over 1000 experts from 60 countries worldwide. Project funding is provided through the state budget of the Republic of Serbia, the World Bank (project SAIGE), and EU (IPA funds).

SFRS is excited to celebrate its third anniversary in March 2022 and announce the opening of the new program “IDENTITIES” dedicated to the research fields of social sciences and humanities. In the coming period, SFRS will open the GREEN programme for science and industry collaboration with the aim of reducing environmental pollution. All forthcoming programs in 2022 will strive to help some of the identified needs and challenges of our society.

SFRS is very proud of what it has accomplished over the past three years, and they look forward to continuing to support excellent ideas and encourage the development of science in Serbia and around the world. Moreover, they look forward to contribute to the implementation of Science Europe‘s Strategy 2021–2026 and engage in its activities in the coming months.
