Diamond Open Access Initiative Gathering Steam: Conference and Launch of DIAMAS

Science Europe together with cOAlition S, OPERAS, and the French National Research Agency (ANR) organised the Diamond Open Access Conference on 19 and 20 September 2022 in Zadar on the beautiful Croatian coast and online. The event was sponsored by the French Ministry for Higher Education and Research (MESR) and kindly hosted by the University of Zadar.

Endorsing organisations and individuals of the ‘Action Plan for Diamond Open Access’ from across Europe and other world regions gathered in the Old Rectorate building of the University of Zadar. They discussed improving the efficiency, quality standards, capacity building, and sustainability of the Diamond Open Access ecosystem. Since its launch in early March, the Action Plan has been endorsed by over 144 organisations and more than 130 individuals.

The conference was the first in-person event where the fast-growing Diamond Open Access Action Plan community could meet and discuss how to operationalise the key actions set out in the document. Speakers from the community were joined by speakers from the French Ministry and the European Commission, highlighting the close connection between policy and practice. Presentations slides are now  published on the event webpage.

Immediately following the conference, a kick-off meeting brought together the partners of the Horizon Europe project called ‘Developing Institutional Open Access Publishing Models to Advance Scholarly Communication’ (DIAMAS). More information and regular updates on the project will be available on the new website: https://diamasproject.eu/

Science Europe is delighted to join 23 European project partners in this three-year project. It will work with its Research Funding and Performing Member Organisations to develop recommendations and guidelines for them to play a role in supporting this venue for Open Access.
