At the recent SE General Assembly on 25 November 2021, the Science Europe Member Organisations elected the members of the Science Europe Governing Board for the next two-year mandate, 2021-2023.

The Science Europe General Assembly adopted the creation of a new working group on Open Science (WG OS) to develop a comprehensive approach towards the topic. WG OS will provide a platform to bring together the Open Science aspects embedded in all activities of Science Europe. It will also broaden the scope of our work in the area, to fulfill the objectives described in the new Science Europe Strategy and Multi-annual Action Plan.

On the occasion of the International Open Access Week 2022 (OA Week 2022) from 24 - 30 October Science Europe reaffirms Open Science as a cross-cutting priority and puts a spotlight on the many activities, initiatives and events carried out in the past months.

It is the opinion of European public R&I actors that publicly funded research and its results should be immediately and openly available to all, without barriers. This is essential to drive knowledge forward, promote innovation, and tackle social issues.

The Global Research Council (GRC) 2021 Annual Meeting, hosted by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the National Research Foundation (NRF) in South Africa, took place remotely between 24 and 28 May 2021. It was preceded by the regional events and meetings of the various GRC groups.

The European Commission initiative to reform research assessment continues to develop at pace. A first public political announcement about the initiative was made as part of the Paris Open Science European Conference 2022 (OSEC2022) on 4 and 5 February.

Science Europe is pleased to present the report of its Conference on Open Science. The conference, which took place on 18 and 19 October 2022 in Brussels, Belgium, and online, brought together close to 600 participants, including 36 expert speakers, for a discussion on open science and its role in the European and global research landscape.

The Global Research Council (GRC) is convening a conference on Responsible Research Assessment to promote global discussion on how research organisations can drive a positive research culture through research assessment criteria and processes. The event, organised by UKRI, Research England, the National Research Foundation (South Africa), and the GRC will be held remotely on November 23–27.

2021 will see a busy start for Science Europe’s priority area ‘Research Data’ with two online events organised in the first few weeks of the year. 

Mario Draghi’s report, “The Future of European Competitiveness,” calls for the EU to boost research and innovation spending to EUR 750-800 billion annually to compete with the US and China. It emphasises meeting the 3% GDP target for R&D and highlights the need for transparent, inclusive funding processes. Science Europe supports these recommendations, stressing the importance of increased R&D funding to ensure the EU’s competitiveness and innovation capacity.

The Nobel Prizes were announced between 4 and 11 October this year, honouring the greatest achievements in medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, peace, and economic sciences. 

Science Europe Governing Board Member and RCN Executive Mari Sundli Tveit represented Science Europe at the Forum of Universities for the Future of Europe, reflecting on the role of universities in the Europe of the future.

The Research Foundation Flanders (FWO), the Fund for Scientific Research (F.R.S-FNRS), and Science Europe are delighted to announce they are co-organising a High Level Conference on Science Communication from 12–13 March 2024. Mark it in your calendars!

On Tuesday 30 May, Science Europe & CoARA jointly organised a side event at the Global Research Council Annual Meeting in The Hague, the Netherlands. The event, entitled ‘Making Research Assessment Reform a Global Endeavour’, aimed to provoke a discussion on research assessment reform across all five Global Research Council regions.

Science Europe was launched formally in its first General Assembly on 21 October 2011 in Berlin. A total of 49 Member Organisations, including the seven official founding members (DFG, ESRC, ETAg, FWO, FNRS, ARRS, and SNSF), celebrated the start of the association and elected its first President, Paul Boyle, and Governing Board.

From 1 to 12 November, United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) took place in Glasgow (UK), bringing together world leaders, scientists and activists to discuss how to accelerate actions towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
