What's going on?

Together with OA2020, the Association of African Universities (AAU), cOAlition S, Electronic Information for Libraries (EIFL), the International Science Council (ISC), and UNESCO, Science Europe organised a workshop on ‘Global Equity in Open Access Publishing’.

The 19^th Annual Meeting of the Science and Technology in Society Forum (STS forum) took place at the Kyoto International Conference Center, Kyoto (Japan), 2-4 October 2022, with the participation of nearly 1,000 global leaders in science and technology, policymaking, business, and media from over 80 countries, regions, and international organizations.

The ‘Science Europe Conference on Open Science’ was held on 18 and 19 October 2022 in Brussels, Belgium and online. The conference programme featured 36 speakers across 4 keynote presentations, 2 panel discussions, and 14 breakout sessions. In total, close to 600 participants attended the event.  

On the occasion of the International Open Access Week 2022 (OA Week 2022) from 24 - 30 October Science Europe reaffirms Open Science as a cross-cutting priority and puts a spotlight on the many activities, initiatives and events carried out in the past months.

On 23 and 24 November in Zurich, Science Europe, in collaboration with the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), and the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI), will organise the 14^th High Level Workshop on ERA. The topic of this year is Research Ethics and Integrity in the Context of Public Engagement 

What can countries do to reduce the R&I disparities in Europe? How can national and European funding be used in a complementary way to widen participation in European programmes? What national measures have been developed to boost brain circulation? On 27 September Science Europe members met to address these important questions and exchange on successful initiatives. 

Science Europe together with cOAlition S, OPERAS, and the French National Research Agency (ANR) organised the Diamond Open Access Conference on 19 and 20 September 2022 in Zadar on the beautiful Croatian coast and online. The event was sponsored by the French Ministry for Higher Education and Research (MESR) and kindly hosted by the University of Zadar. 

Aix-Marseille Université, cOAlition S, and Science Europe are pleased to announce that they are participating in a Horizon Europe project called ‘Developing Institutional Open Access Publishing Models to Advance Scholarly Communication’ (DIAMAS). 

On 22 June, the co-initiators of the Stick to Science initiative have sent an open letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, asking her to intervene urgently in the critical issue for science created by the delay of the association of the United Kingdom and Switzerland to Horizon Europe.

Science Europe will contribute to the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) 2022 with sessions on several key topics: the green and digital transition, research careers, open science, and the reform of research assessment systems.

On 10 June, the Competitiveness Council adopted Conclusions on Research Assessment and the Implementation of Open Science.

Science Europe welcomes the Council Conclusions on research assessment and open science as they recognise the need for a renewed approach to research policies and practices to evolve towards a more positive research culture.

Science Europe welcomes the DFG position paper "Academic Publishing as a Foundation and Area of Leverage for Research Assessment" on two important and timely topics.
