On the occasion of the 2023 International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and International Women's Day, Science Europe highlights the experiences of the women Chairs of its Working Groups.
Science Europe is looking for a Senior Policy Officer to join its team in Brussels. The Policy Officer will focus on EU Framework Programmes on Research & Innovation, and on Cross-border and International Research Collaboration.
The 10th World Science Forum (WSF) took place at the International Convention Center in Cape Town, South Africa, 5–9 December 2022. The WSF is a forum that addresses the social, economic relevance, influence and responsibilities of science, and the 2022 edition addressed the issue of “Science for Social Justice”. The event was organised by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), Member of Science Europe that recently re-joint our organisation, in cooperation with UNESCO, the International Science Council (ISC), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) and the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP).

The 14th edition of the High Level Workshop on the ERA was hosted by the SNSF and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation. It focused on research ethics and integrity in the context of public engagement.
Several initiatives attempt to bridge the R&I gap between Eastern and Western Europe, including the European Commission's €3.3bn "Widening" plan, and the relaunched ERA. Implementation remains difficult, however. Science Europe sponsored and co-organised the first regional event of the new Science|Business Widening Initiative to address this issue.
The 19th Annual Meeting of the Science and Technology in Society Forum (STS forum) took place at the Kyoto International Conference Center, Kyoto (Japan), 2-4 October 2022, with the participation of nearly 1,000 global leaders in science and technology, policymaking, business, and media from over 80 countries, regions, and international organizations.
The ‘Science Europe Conference on Open Science’ was held on 18 and 19 October 2022 in Brussels, Belgium and online. The conference programme featured 36 speakers across 4 keynote presentations, 2 panel discussions, and 14 breakout sessions. In total, close to 600 participants attended the event.
On the occasion of the International Open Access Week 2022 (OA Week 2022) from 24 - 30 October Science Europe reaffirms Open Science as a cross-cutting priority and puts a spotlight on the many activities, initiatives and events carried out in the past months.
Science Europe and its members support Open Science as part of a well-functioning research system. This paper sets the direction for an open and seamless collaboration between research actors and involvement of societal parties where relevant.
Science Europe organised a conference on Open Science. Institutional leaders, researchers at all stages of their careers, and experts from the field were invited to discuss whether Open Science is ready to become the norm in research, and how to ensure an equitable transition.

What can countries do to reduce the R&I disparities in Europe? How can national and European funding be used in a complementary way to widen participation in European programmes? What national measures have been developed to boost brain circulation? On 27 September Science Europe members met to address these important questions and exchange on successful initiatives.
Science Europe together with cOAlition S, OPERAS, and the French National Research Agency (ANR) organised the Diamond Open Access Conference on 19 and 20 September 2022 in Zadar on the beautiful Croatian coast and online. The event was sponsored by the French Ministry for Higher Education and Research (MESR) and kindly hosted by the University of Zadar.
Aix-Marseille Université, cOAlition S, and Science Europe are pleased to announce that they are participating in a Horizon Europe project called ‘Developing Institutional Open Access Publishing Models to Advance Scholarly Communication’ (DIAMAS).
Science Europe, OPERAS, cOAlition S, and ANR organised a first conference on Diamond Open Access to discuss operationalisation of the Action Plan for Diamond Open Access and to introduce the DIAMAS project.
For Science Europe, 2021 was a very important year: the association celebrated its 10th year of existence. Founded in 2011, it has grown into a respected and influential voice in the European research policy debate. Moreover, we published a new Strategy Plan for 2021–2026, which maps our collective objectives and sets a specific yet flexible action framework over the next five years.
On 22 June, the co-initiators of the Stick to Science initiative have sent an open letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, asking her to intervene urgently in the critical issue for science created by the delay of the association of the United Kingdom and Switzerland to Horizon Europe.
Science Europe will contribute to the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) 2022 with sessions on several key topics: the green and digital transition, research careers, open science, and the reform of research assessment systems.
On 10 June, the Competitiveness Council adopted Conclusions on Research Assessment and the Implementation of Open Science.
The Council Conclusions are an important step in recognising the relevance of Open Science and reforming research assessment, which are two essential elements of the cultural shift that are necessary to put research quality and openness are the cornerstones of positive research cultures.
